Burial will take place with full Fireman Honors including a final call at Nappanee Fire Dept. Ruben Chupp, Pastor of North Main Street Mennonite Church will officiate. Family and friends may call from 2-4 and 5-8 Friday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee and for 1 hour prior to the Funeral Service which will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday at the funeral home. Surviving are his sons and grandchildren, Jim (Heidi) Abel and their daughters, Sydney and Payton, Fishers, Chris (Mindy) Abel and their children, Bryce and Katie, Nappanee sister, Becky (Johnnie) Moody, Granger brothers, Steve Abel, Nappanee, Rick (Gail) Abel, Wakarusa and his former wife, Rita Tucker, Wakarusa. Don was named Nappanee Citizen of the year in 2000. He was a former Elkhart County Councilman. He also served on the 4th of July committee, Nappanee Redevelopment Commission from 1994 - 2007, and NorthWood Dollars for Scholars committee. Don helped to start the Butch Nine Scholarship committee. He was very active in the community serving on the Nappanee Smokey Stovers Fire Dept. Don was owner of Franklin Coach in Nappanee. He was a 1964 graduate of Wakarusa High School and lived his lifetime in this area. He was born Decemin Elkhart to Paul and Evelyn (Roose) Abel. Abel, age 66, of Nappanee, died at 4:45 am, Tuesday, Augat Elkhart General Hospital, where he had been admitted Sunday.
